Springfield, Missouri – A severe weather window will open across the state of Missouri this afternoon, with thunderstorms developing rapidly from noon until 8 p.m. today. According to the National Weather Service, the storms will bring hazardous conditions, including strong winds up to 70 mph, hail up to golf ball size, and the possibility of tornadoes.

The storms will move quickly, traveling at speeds of 50-60 mph, which means their impact will be swift. Areas from noon to 4 p.m. will experience the initial wave of severe weather, followed by a second round between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., and the most intense period from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. As conditions continue to develop, the NWS warns that a few tornadoes, potentially of EF2 strength, could also form.

Residents are urged to stay weather-aware and ensure they have multiple ways to receive warnings, such as weather apps or NOAA weather radios. Affected areas include central and southern Missouri, with specific warnings for counties such as Greene, Christian, and Taney.

As the storms will move quickly, it’s important to prepare in advance by securing outdoor items and avoiding travel during the most intense periods. The severe weather threat will dissipate by late evening, but more updates are expected as conditions evolve.
