Kansas City, Missouri – Heavy rain and dangerous storms are expected to sweep across Missouri today, with up to 4 inches of rainfall and damaging winds threatening areas from Kansas City to Columbia by late afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, a Flood Watch remains in effect for much of the state through 7 a.m. Wednesday. Thunderstorms are forecast to intensify after 1 p.m., especially across central and eastern Missouri, bringing the risk of wind gusts up to 65 mph and hail up to one inch in diameter.

Jefferson City, Sedalia, and Columbia could be hit hardest, where localized rainfall totals may reach 3 to 4 inches. Drivers along I-70, Highway 63, and Route 50 should watch for rapidly rising water and low-visibility conditions during evening commutes. Power outages are also possible in areas seeing the strongest wind bursts.

Residents are urged to charge devices, avoid low-lying roads, and stay weather-aware. Schools and businesses may see schedule disruptions depending on localized flooding or damage. This system mirrors past early-summer flood events in the region, particularly the June 2021 storm system.

Warnings remain in place through Wednesday morning, and additional watches could be issued later today if storm intensity increases.
