Jefferson City, MO – A significant winter storm has gripped Missouri, bringing heavy snow, ice, and high winds that are causing treacherous road conditions. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Storm Warning for most of the state, including key highways such as I-70, until 6 a.m. Monday. Residents are urged to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.
According to the NWS, areas across central and eastern Missouri could see snow accumulations between 4 to 7 inches, with additional ice layering up to one-tenth of an inch. Winds gusting up to 35 mph are expected, creating near-blizzard conditions that could drop visibility below ¼ mile. These conditions make roads, including bridges and overpasses, dangerously slick.
Temperatures are forecast to remain below freezing through midweek, prolonging icy conditions. Missouri’s Department of Transportation (MoDOT) advises travelers to check updated road conditions at traveler.modot.org or call 1-888-275-6636 before venturing out. Emergency kits, including food, water, flashlights, and blankets, are strongly recommended if travel is unavoidable.
Looking ahead, light snow showers may persist into Tuesday, but the region is expected to see clearing skies by Wednesday. However, bitter cold temperatures will linger, with daytime highs barely reaching the 20s. Drivers and residents should continue to exercise caution and prepare for potential power outages as ice accumulation weighs on tree limbs and power lines.
