Springfield, MO – A winter storm is expected to impact the Ozarks this weekend, bringing snow, freezing rain, and potentially dangerous travel conditions along the I-44 corridor. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch effective from Saturday evening through early Monday morning.

According to the National Weather Service, periods of snow, sleet, and freezing rain are likely to begin late Saturday night, intensifying into Sunday. Accumulations of 2 to 4 inches of snow are forecast, with localized areas potentially seeing up to 5 inches. Ice accumulation up to a quarter-inch is possible, further increasing the risk of hazardous travel.

Temperatures will plummet into the single digits by Sunday night, with wind chills dipping below zero. Drivers are urged to exercise caution, especially on major routes like I-44 and local highways, where visibility and road conditions may rapidly deteriorate.

Sunday will see highs near 41 degrees before a sharp drop in temperatures. Rain transitioning to snow is expected Sunday evening. Minor to moderate impacts are forecast across the region, but northern parts of the Springfield area could experience severe travel disruptions.

Looking ahead, Monday and Tuesday will bring frigid temperatures, with highs in the low 20s and overnight lows plunging into the single digits. The region may see subzero wind chills, so residents are advised to prepare for extended cold conditions.
