Kansas City, Missouri – Torrential rain and late-night thunderstorms are hitting western Missouri hard, with flood risks stretching into Wednesday morning along I-35 and surrounding communities.

According to the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill, a Flood Watch remains in effect until 7 a.m. Wednesday, with a 90% chance of rain continuing Tuesday night. Excessive runoff could flood low-lying areas, creeks, and streams, particularly in urban zones like Kansas City, Overland Park, and Independence. Some locations could receive 1 to 2 inches of rain.

By Wednesday afternoon, rain chances drop significantly, with mostly sunny skies and highs near 75°F expected in Kansas City. Still, local officials advise residents to avoid flooded roadways, especially before 9 a.m. when water may still cover low spots. Flash flooding is possible in Clay, Platte, Jackson, and Cass counties, so stay weather-aware and monitor alerts closely.

Rain chances return Thursday afternoon, with scattered storms likely into the evening. Friday brings another round of thunderstorms before drying out Saturday and Sunday. This unsettled pattern marks the start of a wetter-than-usual June for western Missouri.

Stay alert: If your area is flood-prone, keep your devices charged, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow alerts from MoDOT and emergency management.
