Springfield, Mo. – Drivers across southwest Missouri are waking up to dense fog Thursday morning, with visibility dipping below a quarter mile in some areas and scattered thunderstorms expected to follow by mid-afternoon. The fog is causing slowdowns on major routes, including I-44 and U.S. Highway 60.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, the region will see temperatures between 67 and 73 degrees, with a 30–75% chance of showers and storms developing after noon. The strongest cells may produce brief downpours and lightning, mainly in central and southern counties.
In Springfield, Branson, and Lebanon, isolated storms may affect the evening commute. Farther south—near West Plains and the Missouri-Arkansas border—light rain chances (10–20%) will persist into the weekend, particularly Sunday and Monday.
Residents are urged to use low beams during foggy morning hours, allow extra travel time, and monitor changing weather conditions. If thunderstorms develop later today, avoid outdoor plans and secure loose items.
While storm chances taper off Friday and Saturday, forecasters warn that low-end rain could return east of Springfield through early next week. Warnings remain in effect this morning for fog-related hazards; check for updates as weather conditions evolve.
