Springfield, Mo. – Severe thunderstorms and repeated rounds of rain will hammer Springfield and southwest Missouri from Tuesday through Thursday, bringing the threat of flash flooding and hazardous travel, especially along U.S. 65 and city arterials. Drivers and residents should prepare for rapidly changing conditions, with the National Weather Service warning of frequent storms and intense rainfall during the midweek stretch.

According to the National Weather Service, showers and thunderstorms will ramp up early Tuesday and linger through Wednesday night. The heaviest rainfall is expected Tuesday and Tuesday night, with localized downpours possibly exceeding an inch and a half in spots. South winds may gust up to 25 mph, compounding the risk for downed branches and debris on roads. The NWS forecasts a 90% chance of showers and storms each day, with rain persisting into Thursday before tapering off by the afternoon.

Communities across Greene County, including Springfield, Battlefield, and Willard, should watch for rising water on low-lying roads and avoid travel through flooded areas. Flash flooding is especially possible along streams, underpasses, and intersections. If your route includes U.S. 65, Glenstone Avenue, or Sunshine Street, stay alert for ponding and sudden slowdowns.

Keep mobile devices charged, check emergency kits, and review school or work closure information as weather could disrupt normal routines. Utility outages are possible where thunderstorm winds are strongest.
