Springfield, MO – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 9 p.m. tonight for most counties in southern Missouri, as freezing drizzle and dangerous wind chills create hazardous conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, on-and-off freezing drizzle will continue throughout the morning and return after the main system passes in the afternoon. A light glaze of ice is possible on untreated and elevated surfaces, increasing risks for slick roads, bridges, and sidewalks.

Snow accumulations are expected northwest of I-44, while areas to the south will see less accumulation. Behind the precipitation, cold Arctic air will push into the region, dropping wind chills between -5 and 10 degrees overnight. Sustained northwest winds of 5-15 mph, with gusts up to 25 mph, will contribute to the frigid conditions.

Officials urge residents to exercise caution while traveling, as roads may become slick and visibility could be reduced. The Missouri Department of Transportation advises checking road conditions before heading out and allowing extra travel time.

Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing into Thursday morning before a gradual warming trend later in the week.
