Kansas City, Missouri – Severe thunderstorms could rattle much of central and western Missouri on Tuesday, bringing the threat of large hail, damaging winds, and localized flash flooding during the afternoon and evening hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, areas from Columbia to St. Joseph, including the I-70 and I-35 corridors, are under a Level 2 (Slight) risk for severe weather beginning Tuesday afternoon. The strongest storms are expected between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m., with up to quarter-size hail, 60 mph wind gusts, and heavy rainfall possible.
The threat follows a stretch of warm, humid weather through Monday, with highs reaching the upper 80s across most of Missouri. Smoke from Canadian wildfires may reduce air quality and visibility in parts of the state, particularly in northern and central counties.
Drivers should prepare for rapidly changing road conditions Tuesday, especially during the evening commute. Flash flooding could impact low-lying areas and urban drainage systems. Power outages and downed tree limbs are also possible.
Storm chances diminish by late Tuesday night, but additional updates may follow if the system slows or strengthens. Stay weather-aware and monitor local alerts through Tuesday evening.
