Kansas City, Missouri – Showers and strong thunderstorms are expected to disrupt travel and outdoor plans in Kansas City starting Tuesday, with flash flooding possible along I-35 and I-70.

According to the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill, widespread rainfall will move into western Missouri Tuesday afternoon, bringing the first round of thunderstorms. Some storms may produce gusty winds, frequent lightning, and isolated hail—especially between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning.

Communities across Jackson, Clay, and Cass counties should expect continued wet weather through Saturday. The NWS notes a 60% to 80% chance of rain every day from Tuesday through Thursday night, with a slight tapering into the weekend. River flooding remains a concern, particularly east of Clinton to Moberly, where recent rain has saturated the ground.

Drivers should avoid flooded roadways and monitor flash flood alerts, particularly in low-lying areas or near creeks. If thunder roars, head indoors—lightning and isolated tornadoes can’t be ruled out.

Here’s a 5-day spring weather outlook for Kansas City:

  • Tuesday: Showers and thunderstorms likely, high near 78°F
  • Wednesday: Chance of storms, some severe in early morning, high near 74°F
  • Thursday: Thunderstorms likely, 80% chance, high around 75°F
  • Friday: Showers possible before noon, then partly cloudy, high near 69°F
  • Saturday: Chance of showers returns, high near 72°F
