Burlington, Iowa – Drivers across parts of southeast Iowa and western Illinois faced dense fog early Thursday, with visibility dropping to a quarter mile in spots near Burlington, Fairfield, and Macomb.
According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, the fog developed before sunrise and is expected to lift by mid-morning as temperatures rise. The advisory covers Jefferson, Henry, Des Moines, Van Buren, and Lee counties in Iowa, along with Henderson, Warren, Hancock, and McDonough counties in Illinois. Nearby areas in northeast Missouri, including Clark and Scotland counties, are also affected.
Cities like Mount Pleasant, Fort Madison, and Monmouth may see rapidly changing visibility on roadways. Motorists are urged to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and allow extra time for the morning commute. Bridges and low-lying areas may be especially prone to sudden drops in visibility.
Conditions are expected to improve steadily after 9 a.m., but drivers should remain alert for lingering patchy fog, especially in rural areas. No further advisories are expected unless conditions worsen.
