St. Louis, MO – Strong thunderstorms could erupt across southeast Missouri and southwest Illinois Wednesday afternoon, bringing the threat of damaging winds, large hail and even a tornado or two during the peak of the day.
According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, the greatest risk for severe storms will develop between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., mainly south of Interstate 44 in Missouri and south of Interstate 64 in Illinois. The overall threat level is rated 2 out of 5, but forecasters stress that any storm that strengthens could quickly become dangerous.
Across Missouri, communities from Rolla and Farmington to Cape Girardeau sit in the corridor with the highest hail potential. In Illinois, Carbondale, Marion and areas toward Mount Vernon could see similar impacts. Drivers along Interstate 55 and Interstate 57 should prepare for sudden downpours and strong wind gusts that may reduce visibility and create hazardous travel.
Large hail could damage vehicles and roofs, while isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out. Residents should secure outdoor items, charge mobile devices and review severe weather safety plans before storms develop.
Storms are expected to weaken by Wednesday evening, but additional updates or warnings may be issued if conditions intensify.
