ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Commuters across a wide portion of Missouri and southern Illinois are facing a hazardous morning drive as dense fog severely reduces visibility on major interstates and local roads.

According to the National Weather Service, a Dense Fog Advisory is in effect until 9 a.m. Tuesday for dozens of counties in both states. Visibility may drop to one-quarter mile or less, creating dangerous conditions during the morning rush hour.

In Missouri, the advisory covers a large area from the St. Louis region south to the Arkansas border, affecting travel along Interstate 44, Interstate 55, and U.S. Route 67. Communities impacted include Rolla, Farmington, West Plains, and Branson. Across the river in Illinois, the fog is affecting travel in Madison, St. Clair, and Marion counties, impacting drivers near Alton, Belleville, and Centralia.

Officials are urging motorists to prepare for sudden drops in visibility. Drivers should reduce speed, use low-beam headlights, and leave plenty of space between vehicles.

The dense fog is expected to lift after 9 a.m. as temperatures rise, but travelers should remain cautious throughout the morning.
