Springfield, MO – A record-breaking heat wave will continue through Saturday as high temperatures reach into the low 90s across southwestern Missouri. Residents along I-44 and I-49 should prepare for an extended period of unseasonably warm weather, with elevated fire danger due to dry air and gusty winds. Local authorities warn against outdoor burning and advise caution when driving on dry grass along roadways.

According to the National Weather Service, today’s highs will climb to near 90, while Saturday’s temperatures could push into the mid-90s. This heat wave far exceeds the normal high of 70 for this time of year. Meanwhile, southerly winds of 15 to 20 mph are expected today, with stronger gusts arriving on Saturday.

A cold front is forecasted to sweep through the region Sunday, bringing significant relief as temperatures drop back into the 70s. Wind gusts up to 25 mph will follow the front, shifting from south to north, with cooler overnight lows dipping into the 50s by Sunday night. The cooler air will persist into early next week, with some areas possibly seeing frost by Monday morning.

The NWS has issued an elevated fire weather warning for areas west of I-49 and north of I-44, where dry conditions and wind could rapidly spread fires. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents are urged to check their property for potential fire hazards, including trailers with dragging chains or dry brush near homes.

Looking ahead, next week’s forecast promises a return to seasonal fall conditions, with highs in the low 70s and the potential for frost across northern Missouri early Monday. Prepare for cooler mornings by covering sensitive plants and securing outdoor equipment.
