Springfield, MO – A powerful winter storm is delivering heavy snow to Kansas and Missouri, creating hazardous travel conditions. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Storm Warning for several counties in both states, effective until 6 p.m. Friday.

According to the NWS, snow accumulations between 2 and 4 inches are expected. Affected areas include Cherokee County in Kansas and Dent, Texas, Jasper, Greene, and several other counties in Missouri. Slippery road conditions are anticipated, potentially impacting both the morning and evening commutes.

Residents are urged to prepare for dangerous travel. Authorities advise carrying an emergency kit with a flashlight, food, and water in vehicles. For updated road conditions, Kansas residents can call 511, while Missouri residents can reach out to 1-888-275-6636.

The storm is part of a larger system sweeping through the Midwest, bringing frigid temperatures and treacherous weather. Snowfall rates are likely to intensify during the early morning hours before tapering off late Friday afternoon. Crews are actively treating roads, but ice and compacted snow may still create challenges for drivers.

The NWS recommends avoiding travel unless necessary. If travel is unavoidable, ensure your vehicle is equipped for winter emergencies. Schools and businesses in affected areas may adjust schedules due to hazardous conditions.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and heed official warnings as conditions evolve.
