Jackson, Mississippi – Up to 8 inches of rain could swamp roads and neighborhoods in parts of southwest Mississippi starting late Tuesday, with the greatest threat for flash flooding and isolated severe storms continuing through Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Significant Flood Threat is in place for areas including Natchez, Brookhaven, and western Wilkinson County, where 4–8 inches of rain are likely. A wider zone from Vicksburg to Jackson and Laurel sits under an Elevated Threat, with totals of 3–6 inches and flooding possible on major roads and in low-lying areas.

Isolated severe thunderstorms may also develop Tuesday evening, especially west of I-55, bringing damaging wind gusts, quarter-sized hail, and a slight tornado risk. Areas under a Marginal Risk for severe weather include Vicksburg, Jackson, and Hattiesburg.

Residents are urged to avoid flooded roads, charge phones and backup batteries, and prepare for potential water rescues or brief power outages. Emergency officials warn that flash flooding could happen quickly overnight Tuesday into Wednesday, particularly in areas hit by repeated downpours.

Warnings remain in effect through Thursday, and additional advisories may be issued as the storm system stalls over the region.
