Jackson, MS – Severe weather is sweeping across central and eastern Mississippi this Sunday morning, bringing the threat of tornadoes and damaging winds up to 70 mph.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, an enhanced risk area stretches from Hattiesburg through Meridian, Philadelphia, and into Columbus, with the highest danger window running through 9 a.m. Residents in these areas should remain indoors and have multiple ways to receive emergency alerts.

The enhanced risk zone includes cities such as Laurel and Eupora, where tornadoes are likely, and high winds may cause tree damage and power outages. Areas to the west, including Jackson and Brookhaven, are under a marginal to slight risk, where winds up to 60 mph remain possible.

This severe event is expected to progress quickly eastward throughout the morning. Schools and services in affected areas are urged to monitor conditions closely, and travelers should delay departures until storms clear.

Preparedness tips include charging devices, securing outdoor objects, and moving to a safe shelter, ideally a basement or interior room away from windows.
