Jackson, MS – Residents of Mississippi should prepare for a significant weather system tonight, with severe storms and strong winds expected to last through Friday morning. The National Weather Service warns of potential flash flooding, isolated tornadoes, and damaging winds up to 60 mph.

According to the NWS Jackson office, the greatest threats begin Thursday at 9 p.m., intensifying between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. Friday. Affected areas include Jackson, Greenville, and surrounding counties, with a slight risk for severe weather across central Mississippi. Sustained winds of 20-25 mph are expected, with gusts reaching 40 mph.

Drivers on major roadways, including I-55 and Highway 49, should exercise caution due to the risk of high winds and low visibility caused by heavy rain. The NWS advises securing outdoor items and staying indoors during peak storm hours. High-profile vehicles, such as trucks and RVs, may experience difficulty on roadways during gusty conditions.

Additional rounds of heavy rain are forecast for Saturday and Saturday night, with 3-5 inches of total rainfall possible by the weekend’s end. Urban areas and low-lying regions are at increased risk for flash flooding.

Looking ahead, skies will clear by Sunday, bringing a sunny high near 67°F. However, with more storms expected Saturday evening, residents should monitor weather updates and be prepared to act quickly in case of tornado warnings or rising floodwaters.

Call to Action: Stay informed by following local weather updates, and avoid driving through flooded areas. If conditions worsen, seek shelter immediately.
