Jackson, Mississippi – Canadian wildfire smoke is drifting into Mississippi, obscuring skies and potentially reducing air quality through midweek, according to the National Weather Service.

The smoke, carried south from the Canadian Prairies, could reach ground level late Monday into Tuesday, especially overnight. The Jackson office of the NWS says the smoke may cause minor to moderate air quality reductions in central and northern Mississippi, particularly in areas like Tupelo, Greenwood, and Columbus.

Though the hazy skies are expected to produce vibrant sunrises and sunsets, officials stress the phenomenon is not linked to fire danger on the ground. However, individuals with respiratory issues are urged to limit time outdoors and monitor local air quality reports via AirNow.gov.

Motorists may also encounter reduced visibility during early morning hours, especially along I-55 and Highway 82 corridors. Schools and outdoor workplaces should consider adjusting outdoor activities if conditions worsen.

Smoke presence is expected to persist through at least Wednesday morning, with updated advisories possible if air quality levels deteriorate further.
