Memphis, Tennessee – Millions across the Mississippi and Ohio Valleys could face widespread severe weather Sunday, with damaging winds, large hail, and a few tornadoes possible as a powerful storm system moves through the region.

According to the NOAA Storm Prediction Center, a broad severe weather threat is expected to develop Sunday afternoon and continue into Sunday night from parts of the Mid-South into the lower Ohio Valley and southern Great Lakes.

The highest threat currently stretches across an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) zone from eastern Oklahoma and Arkansas through western Tennessee and Kentucky into southern Indiana and parts of Illinois. Cities including Little Rock, Memphis, Evansville, Clarksville, and Terre Haute sit within this higher risk corridor.

Forecasters say widespread damaging wind gusts will likely be the primary hazard as storms organize into fast-moving lines. However, isolated tornadoes are also possible, especially where storms remain more discrete before forming into a line.

Large hail could also develop with stronger storm cells, particularly during the earlier phases of storm development.

Travel along major corridors including Interstate 40, Interstate 55, Interstate 24, and Interstate 65 could be impacted as storms move across the region Sunday evening.

Residents are urged to monitor updated forecasts and ensure they have multiple ways to receive weather warnings, as watches and warnings may be issued quickly once storms begin developing Sunday.
