Oxford, Miss. – Strong to severe thunderstorms could rattle northern Mississippi through 5 p.m. Friday, bringing the threat of damaging winds, large hail, and isolated power outages.
According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 209 is now in effect for 21 counties across northern Mississippi, including Desoto, Lafayette, Lee, and Marshall. The storms are expected to develop and intensify throughout the afternoon, with wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail larger than quarters possible in stronger cells.
Communities along I-55 and Highway 78 should prepare for sudden weather changes, especially during the afternoon commute. Outdoor activities and school operations could be impacted in cities like Tupelo, Oxford, and Clarksdale. Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roadways and to watch for downed limbs or debris during heavy rain bursts.
Residents should secure loose outdoor items, stay indoors during severe storms, and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Flashlights and backup phone chargers are recommended in case of power loss.
The thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 5 p.m., with updates likely as the system continues eastward. Additional warnings may follow if conditions worsen.
