Jackson, Mississippi – Scattered thunderstorms could disrupt afternoon plans across central and southern Mississippi today, with the National Weather Service warning of gusty winds, lightning, and the chance for hail in several areas.
According to the NWS Jackson office, storms will be most active from the late morning through early evening hours, continuing a wet pattern that’s expected to linger through Sunday. Daytime highs will reach the low to mid-80s in cities like Hattiesburg (86°F), Laurel (84°F), and Meridian (83°F), adding humidity to already unstable conditions.
Rainfall totals could climb to 0.8 inches in some locations, including Jackson, Vicksburg, and Natchez. Though not every area will see heavy rain, isolated downpours may cause brief ponding on roads, especially along I-55 and I-20. Storms may also produce wind gusts strong enough to down small branches and impact outdoor activities.
Residents are urged to monitor local alerts, secure loose outdoor items, and avoid flooded low spots during heavy rainfall. Those with afternoon travel plans should allow extra time and be prepared for sudden weather changes.
The NWS notes this storm pattern will continue daily through the weekend, with more updates expected if stronger systems develop.
