Jackson, Mississippi – Severe thunderstorms could pack a punch across central and southern Mississippi this evening, bringing damaging winds and hail to areas along and north of Highway 84 through 11 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, storms may produce wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail up to the size of quarters. The greatest threat will be concentrated in the Level 2 “Slight Risk” zone, stretching from Natchez and Brookhaven eastward toward Laurel and Meridian. Timing is critical: storms may begin as early as 6 p.m. in southern counties and continue northward until 11 p.m.
Drivers on Highway 84 should remain alert for sudden gusts and reduced visibility, especially between 6 and 8 p.m. In the Jackson metro area and points north, the storm window extends later into the night. Scattered power outages and tree damage are possible in the hardest-hit areas.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, charge electronic devices, and monitor alerts from local emergency management. Stay indoors during strong wind periods and avoid unnecessary travel.
Severe weather watches remain in effect through late evening, and additional alerts may be issued if storm intensity increases.
