Tupelo, Miss. – Strong thunderstorms are expected to sweep across northern and central Mississippi overnight, threatening damaging winds, large hail, and isolated power outages through 2 a.m. Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for 39 counties, including Tupelo, Oxford, Greenville, and Starkville. The alert covers areas from Desoto and Tunica in the northwest Delta to Noxubee and Winston in the east. Storms could produce gusts up to 60 mph, frequent lightning, and localized flash flooding.

Cities along I-55 and Highway 82 should prepare for rapid storm movement, especially in low-visibility or rural zones. Residents in Leflore, Oktibbeha, and Panola counties are advised to secure outdoor items and avoid unnecessary travel after dark.

Power outages are possible in areas with saturated soil and downed trees. Emergency managers recommend charging phones, checking flashlights, and monitoring NOAA weather radio for updates.

This is the first significant overnight thunderstorm event of June for Mississippi. More watches or warnings may be issued depending on storm development. Warnings remain in effect until 2 a.m., with updates expected hourly.
