Jackson, MS – A dangerous cold weather advisory remains in effect through Thursday morning as temperatures across Mississippi dip well below freezing. The National Weather Service warns of wind chills between 8°F and 12°F, posing risks of frostbite and hypothermia with prolonged exposure. Residents are urged to dress in layers, limit outdoor activity, and protect exposed pipes.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures in Jackson are expected to reach a high of 40°F on Wednesday but drop to 20°F overnight. Calm winds will exacerbate the chilling effect, making outdoor conditions hazardous. If traveling, be cautious on major roadways, including I-55, as frost could form, increasing accident risks.

Looking ahead, Thursday will offer slightly warmer conditions with a high of 48°F, but nighttime lows will hover around 23°F. A warming trend begins Friday, with highs reaching the mid-50s through Saturday. However, the cold will remain dangerous during evening hours, especially for vulnerable populations and pets.

Residents are advised to check on neighbors, ensure proper heating sources, and avoid using portable heaters unsafely indoors. Local shelters are open for those in need.

Prepare for freezing nights by letting faucets drip, covering exposed outdoor pipes, and bringing pets inside. Temperatures will become milder by Sunday, with highs near 53°F and a chance of showers late in the day.

Be vigilant this week and take steps to stay safe during the ongoing cold spell.
