Jackson, MS – Mississippi residents should brace for an elevated wildfire threat this weekend as dry and breezy conditions combine with warm temperatures. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson warns that much of the northern part of the state is at risk, urging residents to heed burn bans and practice caution if burning outdoors.

According to the NWS, today’s temperatures are expected to reach the mid-80s, with a high of 87°F in Jackson. Similar conditions are forecasted across the state, creating ideal circumstances for fires to spread rapidly and complicate containment efforts. The NWS map highlights elevated risk zones, particularly in areas along and north of I-20, including Greenwood, Philadelphia, and Yazoo City.

Local authorities strongly advise against open burning, given the likelihood that fires may escape control. Residents should avoid discarding cigarette butts outdoors and ensure trailer chains are secure to prevent sparks that could ignite roadside fires. The Jackson Fire Department emphasizes that compliance with local burn bans is crucial to prevent unintended fires in this dry period.

The weather forecast for Jackson shows continued sunny conditions throughout the weekend, with highs of 90°F on Sunday. Despite the warm days, nighttime temperatures are expected to drop to the low 60s, offering some respite. Columbus Day will bring slightly cooler weather, with highs around 82°F and mostly clear skies.

Looking ahead, temperatures are projected to dip into the 70s by midweek, accompanied by cooler nights. While the immediate fire threat may decrease as temperatures fall, residents should remain cautious with outdoor burning.
