Minneapolis, MN – Minnesotans are gearing up for a frigid start to the first weekend of the year, with temperatures hovering in the single digits and wind chills falling as low as -20s below zero. Afternoon sunshine is expected, but the bitter cold poses risks for those venturing outdoors.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Twin Cities, highs on Saturday will reach just 12°F, with wind chills dipping to -14°F overnight. The trend continues Sunday, with mostly sunny skies and a high near 13°F, though brisk winds will maintain subzero wind chills. Clear skies at night will lead to a low near 3°F.
Residents should limit outdoor exposure, dress in layers, and ensure pets are protected from the dangerous cold. Frostbite can occur in minutes under these conditions, and hypothermia remains a serious concern.
Looking ahead, Monday and Tuesday will offer slight relief as temperatures rise into the mid-teens during the day, accompanied by partly sunny skies. However, nighttime lows will still fall into the single digits. Roads, including major thoroughfares such as I-35 and I-94, are expected to remain clear, but drivers should remain cautious of icy patches.
NWS forecasts mostly sunny skies through midweek, with daytime highs gradually increasing to 16°F on Monday and 14°F on Tuesday.
Stay updated on changing weather conditions and take precautions against the cold. Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle if traveling and check on vulnerable neighbors.
