Duluth, Minnesota – Thunderstorms and showers swept across the Northland early Monday, bringing bursts of heavy rain and frequent lightning to cities including Duluth, Hibbing, and Grand Rapids. Drivers and residents in these areas are advised to use caution as the most intense weather is expected to continue through late morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, as of 3 a.m., storms remained mostly sub-severe, with brief periods of heavy rainfall and lightning posing the main threats for the next one to two hours. While widespread severe weather is not expected early, forecasters say conditions could intensify later today.
Roads such as Highway 53 near Cotton and Highway 2 through Floodwood may become slick during heavy downpours, and isolated power outages are possible due to lightning strikes. Residents should secure outdoor items and keep phones charged in case weather conditions worsen. The greatest severe weather risk is anticipated to develop during the afternoon, potentially impacting travel and outdoor plans from Moose Lake to International Falls.
Storm watches remain in effect for much of the Northland, with further updates expected if stronger storms develop throughout Monday.
