St. Cloud, Minn. – Strong thunderstorms sweeping across central Minnesota could bring damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph and hail the size of ping pong balls through 7 p.m. Monday, prompting a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for much of the region.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Watch No. 354 was issued at 2:30 p.m. CDT and covers 18 counties, including Stearns, Wright, Crow Wing, and Otter Tail. The storms are tracking east-northeast and are expected to intensify as they move across central and north-central Minnesota.
Areas along and between Alexandria and Brainerd—particularly near highways U.S. 10, 71, and I-94—are at the highest risk for wind damage and downed trees. Hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter may also impact outdoor structures, crops, and vehicles.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or local alerts. Power outages are possible if winds bring down lines or snap tree limbs.
Storm activity is expected to weaken by late evening, but additional alerts may be issued if new cells develop.
