Minneapolis, Minnesota – Ground-level wildfire smoke is expected to thin out across Minnesota by 2 p.m. Monday, offering a temporary but welcome break from hazy skies and poor air quality. However, that relief will come alongside an increasing threat of severe thunderstorms moving in from the west.

According to the National Weather Service Twin Cities, a cold front will push through western and central Minnesota this afternoon, triggering scattered storms with gusts up to 30 mph. These winds will help clear smoke near the surface but also create unstable conditions for potentially severe weather into the evening.

The most at-risk areas include St. Cloud, Mankato, and the Twin Cities metro, where storms could bring damaging winds, large hail, and frequent lightning. Parts of southern and eastern Minnesota may see storms last through Tuesday. Residents are urged to review severe weather safety plans and monitor local alerts.

Drivers should be cautious on roads as visibility fluctuates with shifting smoke and storm cells. Those with respiratory concerns should take advantage of cleaner air Monday afternoon but remain indoors if lightning approaches.

Smoke may return later this week. Stay tuned as new air quality advisories and storm watches could be issued.
