Duluth, MN – A powerful winter storm is set to blanket parts of northern Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin Tuesday night, threatening hazardous travel into late Wednesday. Gusty winds, heavy snow, and a wintry mix could create dangerous driving conditions along major routes, including Hwy 61 and Hwy 53.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a Winter Storm Watch goes into effect Tuesday evening and will remain in place until 1 a.m. Thursday. Snow accumulation could exceed 12 inches in some areas, with the highest totals expected along the North Shore into Duluth and surrounding cities. Gusts up to 35 mph may create near-whiteout conditions at times.
Northwest Wisconsin, including Douglas and Bayfield counties, is forecast to receive a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain, making roads especially slick. Commuters should avoid unnecessary travel and prepare emergency kits for their vehicles.
The worst of the storm will arrive late Tuesday night and continue through Wednesday evening. Snow totals of 2 to 4 inches are possible overnight Tuesday, with an additional 3 to 7 inches during the day Wednesday.
