Duluth, Minnesota – Strong storms and flooding concerns aren’t done yet for northeast Minnesota. Duluth residents could see more downpours and damaging winds by Sunday afternoon, with Highway 61 and local low-lying roads at particular risk.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a Flood Watch remains in effect until 1 p.m. CDT Sunday for St. Louis, Carlton, Lake, and Cook Counties. Heavy rain overnight has led to excessive runoff, and more isolated storms could push rainfall totals past two inches. That may trigger flash flooding of creeks, underpasses, and city streets.

Additional showers and thunderstorms are expected again after 3 p.m. Sunday, with some becoming severe in nearby north-central Wisconsin. Gusts of 40 to 60 mph, hail, and rapid rainfall are all possible. Residents are urged to avoid driving through standing water and monitor for Flash Flood Warnings.

On beaches near Duluth and Wisconsin Point, wave action may lead to a moderate rip current risk on Sunday. Swimmers should check for any Beach Hazard Statements before entering the water.
