Minneapolis, MN – An extreme cold warning remains in effect for central and southern Minnesota through 10 a.m. Tuesday. Wind chills are expected to reach as low as -40°F, posing severe frostbite risks on exposed skin in under 10 minutes.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), this Arctic blast will persist into Wednesday with high temperatures peaking near 9°F today. Southbound winds of up to 15 mph will keep wind chill values dangerously low through the evening. A dusting of snow is possible late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, particularly in areas along I-94, where road conditions could worsen during commutes.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure. If venturing outside, wear multiple layers and cover exposed skin to reduce frostbite risks. Check on neighbors and ensure pets remain indoors. The NWS recommends keeping an emergency kit in vehicles, including blankets, flashlights, and water.

Five-Day Forecast

Tuesday: High of 9°F, wind chills near -33°F, increasing clouds.

Wednesday: High of 27°F, chance of flurries, light winds.

Thursday: Mostly sunny, high of 11°F.

Friday: High near 22°F, partly sunny skies.

Saturday: High near 27°F, mostly cloudy conditions.

While conditions will slightly improve Wednesday, prolonged exposure to cold will remain hazardous. Stay informed with updated forecasts and plan travel accordingly.
