Duluth, MN – Travelers across northern Minnesota should prepare for light snow, sub-freezing temperatures, and gusty winds on Thanksgiving. A weak winter system and lake-effect snow along the South Shore of Lake Superior are expected to create challenging conditions for drivers, especially on Highway 61 and surrounding areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, light snow will begin Thanksgiving morning and continue intermittently through the day. Isolated snow accumulations of up to 4 inches are forecast near the International Border, while localized areas in northern Iron County could see up to 8 inches. Roads may become slippery, and visibility could be reduced during peak travel hours.
Thursday’s temperatures will remain cold, with highs near 28°F and lows dropping to 20°F by nightfall. Northwest winds, gusting up to 25 mph, will make it feel even colder, so outdoor holiday activities should be planned accordingly.
Looking ahead, the extended forecast shows mostly cloudy skies and continued chances for flurries through the weekend. Friday’s high will only reach 22°F, with a sharp drop to 11°F on Saturday, accompanied by brisk winds. By Sunday, calmer conditions will return, though temperatures will stay below average, with a high near 24°F.
Travelers are advised to check road conditions and monitor weather updates before heading out. Local agencies recommend carrying winter essentials, such as blankets, snacks, and emergency supplies, for longer trips.
