Aberdeen, SD – A potent winter storm is set to impact northeast South Dakota and west-central Minnesota starting Tuesday morning, bringing heavy snow, icy conditions, and dangerous winds through Wednesday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Aberdeen, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for counties including Brown, Marshall, Grant, Roberts, Day, and extending into Traverse and Big Stone counties in Minnesota. The storm could deliver 6 inches or more of snow, combined with a light glaze of ice. Winds are expected to gust up to 40 mph, creating blowing snow and reducing visibility, especially in open areas.
Communities like Milbank, Watertown, Ortonville, and Wheaton should prepare for hazardous driving conditions, particularly during the Tuesday morning and evening commutes. Blowing snow may create near white-out conditions at times.
Officials urge residents to monitor weather alerts, avoid unnecessary travel, and keep emergency kits in vehicles. Schools and businesses may experience schedule disruptions depending on storm timing and severity.
This system marks a late-season winter event, following what has been a relatively mild March for much of the region. Power outages are possible where ice accumulates on power lines and trees.
