Duluth, MN – An arctic air mass has brought life-threatening cold to northeast Minnesota, with wind chills plummeting to -50 degrees Tuesday morning. Residents are urged to limit outdoor exposure as frostbite can occur in as little as 10 minutes.
According to the National Weather Service, an Extreme Cold Warning is in effect until noon Tuesday for much of northern Minnesota. Wind chills of -35 to -50 degrees are impacting areas from Duluth to International Falls, with actual temperatures reaching -24°F. Warmer conditions will arrive by Wednesday, but temperatures will remain frigid through tonight, with lows near -1°F.
Road conditions may worsen as snow is expected to move into the region late Tuesday night, bringing 1-2 inches by Wednesday morning. Highway 53 and other major routes could see slick conditions. Officials advise using caution while traveling and checking vehicles for cold-weather readiness.
Wednesday will bring gradual improvement, with highs around 17°F under mostly sunny skies. The region will see slightly warmer conditions later this week, with temperatures reaching 19°F by Friday, though gusty winds could still create hazards.
Stay safe by dressing in layers, wearing gloves and face coverings, and avoiding prolonged exposure. Check on neighbors and ensure portable heaters are used safely indoors.
