Chanhassen, MN – Minnesota residents are preparing for extreme cold and hazardous wind conditions over the coming days, with multiple weather advisories in effect.
According to the National Weather Service in Chanhassen, a Wind Advisory remains active until 7 p.m. Friday, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph across Douglas, Pope, Stevens, and Swift counties. Beginning Saturday at 6 p.m., a Cold Weather Advisory will take effect, warning of wind chills as low as 35 below zero until midnight Sunday. An Extreme Cold Warning will follow from midnight Sunday through Tuesday at noon, with wind chills dropping to a life-threatening 44 below zero.
Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities and wear layers to prevent frostbite, which can occur in less than 10 minutes under these conditions. Hypothermia is also a serious risk with prolonged exposure to these temperatures. Authorities urge caution for travelers, particularly those operating high-profile vehicles in strong winds.
The National Weather Service recommends keeping pets indoors, checking on vulnerable neighbors, and safely operating portable heaters. Conditions will remain dangerous until Tuesday afternoon, with significant improvement expected afterward.
