Minneapolis, MN – Bitterly cold air will surge into Minnesota this weekend, bringing wind chills as low as -40°F and hazardous conditions. Residents are urged to bundle up and avoid unnecessary travel as frostbite could occur within minutes of exposure.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the Arctic front will begin Friday night with temperatures dropping to around 5°F. Winds gusting up to 30 mph will push wind chills to dangerous levels Saturday night, ranging from -25°F to -40°F. These conditions will persist through Tuesday morning, creating significant risks for those outdoors or on the roads, particularly along major routes like I-35 and Highway 10.
Drivers should prepare for slippery conditions as frigid air hardens road surfaces. Officials recommend keeping emergency supplies, including blankets and water, in vehicles.
The extended forecast shows little relief, with Saturday’s high near 9°F and Sunday’s low plummeting to -14°F. By Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, temperatures will struggle to reach 6°F.
Residents should check heating systems and stock up on supplies, including food and medications. Limit outdoor activities for pets, ensuring they are not exposed for long periods.
Temperatures may moderate slightly by midweek, but the NWS warns that frostbite and hypothermia remain significant risks during this prolonged cold spell.
