Minneapolis, MN – A powerful storm system is set to bring severe winter conditions to western Minnesota late Friday night into Saturday, with blizzard conditions possible. Strong winds, heavy snowfall, and ice accumulation could make travel dangerous and lead to widespread power outages.
According to the National Weather Service in the Twin Cities, rain will begin Friday evening before transitioning to a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain after 4 a.m. Saturday. By mid-morning, heavy snow is expected to develop, with rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour possible. Wind gusts reaching up to 55 mph could create whiteout conditions and make roads nearly impassable.
A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for Chippewa, Douglas, Lac Qui Parle, Pope, Stevens, Swift, and Yellow Medicine counties from late Friday night through Saturday evening. Expected snow accumulations range from 2 to 4 inches, with sleet accumulation between one-tenth and two-tenths of an inch and a light glaze of ice. The combination of ice and high winds may lead to downed trees and power lines.
Residents are urged to prepare for hazardous conditions by avoiding unnecessary travel, securing outdoor objects, and having emergency supplies on hand. Officials advise monitoring weather updates as conditions may change rapidly.
