Duluth, MN – Residents across northern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin are bracing for dangerously cold temperatures as an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect from midnight tonight until 10 a.m. CST Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Duluth, wind chills could plummet as low as 45 below zero in Minnesota and 42 below zero in Wisconsin, posing a serious risk of frostbite within 10 minutes on exposed skin.
Affected Areas
In Minnesota, the warning covers Crow Wing, Aitkin, Pine, Koochiching, Cass, Itasca, Carlton, St. Louis, Cook, and Lake Counties, including Duluth, Brainerd, Grand Rapids, Hibbing, Ely, and International Falls. Tribal lands such as the Fond du Lac Band, Grand Portage Reservation, and Bois Forte Band are also affected.
In Wisconsin, the warning includes Douglas, Bayfield, Ashland, Iron, Burnett, Washburn, Sawyer, and Price Counties, covering cities like Superior, Hayward, Ashland, and Hurley. The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and Madeline Islandare also impacted.
Precautionary Measures
Residents are advised to stay indoors when possible and layer up with hats, face masks, and gloves if going outside. Pets should be brought indoors, and pipes should be insulated to prevent freezing.
