Sioux Falls, S.D. – Outdoor burning could quickly get out of hand across parts of South Dakota and Minnesota today, as warm, dry air combines with gusty winds to create elevated fire danger conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls and the Twin Cities, wind gusts up to 25 mph and relative humidity levels as low as 20% will impact areas from Brookings and Pipestone to Redwood Falls and New Ulm. The most critical threat is expected along and just south of Highway 14, where dry grasses and vegetation remain highly flammable.
Communities in Beadle, Kingsbury, Brookings, Lyon, and Cottonwood counties are urged to avoid any outdoor burning. Similar caution is advised in western Minnesota, including Lac Qui Parle, Yellow Medicine, and Watonwan counties, where west winds could rapidly spread any ignited material.
Officials recommend securing spark-producing equipment, delaying debris burns, and checking with local authorities or the Minnesota DNR before lighting any fires. Conditions will remain risky through Tuesday evening, with potential for additional advisories if winds increase.
Stay tuned for updates if fire weather watches or red flag warnings are issued later today.
