Aberdeen, SD – A blizzard warning has been issued for portions of northeast South Dakota and west-central Minnesota, with hazardous conditions expected from 4 a.m. to 1 p.m. CDT on Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service, the storm will bring snowfall accumulations between 2 and 4 inches, along with sleet and light ice accumulation. Winds could gust as high as 55 mph, creating widespread blowing snow and drastically reducing visibility to less than a quarter mile at times.
The affected areas include the cities of Watertown, Milbank, Sisseton, Clear Lake, Ortonville, and Wheaton. Travel will be treacherous, with slippery roads and whiteout conditions possible. Strong winds may also lead to tree damage and power outages.
Residents are advised to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. If travel is unavoidable, officials recommend carrying a winter survival kit and staying with the vehicle if stranded. In Minnesota, road conditions can be checked at 511mn.org or by calling 511, while South Dakota travelers can also call 511 for updates.
Authorities urge residents to prepare for rapidly deteriorating conditions and to stay indoors until the storm passes. Updates will be provided as the system develops.
