Minneapolis, Minn. – Unhealthy air will persist across Minnesota through at least 6 p.m. Monday as wildfire smoke from Canada continues to blanket the region, prompting a statewide air quality alert.
According to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, fine particle levels are expected to reach the Red or Unhealthy category in the north and Orange or Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups in central and southern areas, including the Twin Cities, Rochester, and Mankato. The highest smoke concentrations are likely Saturday afternoon, with temporary improvements Sunday before another dense plume arrives Monday.
In Duluth, Brainerd, and International Falls, visibility may be reduced and sensitive groups—such as children, older adults, and those with asthma or heart disease—are advised to avoid prolonged outdoor activity. Metro areas like Minneapolis and St. Paul could also see hazy skies and elevated health risks, especially during Sunday and Monday’s smoke surges.
Residents are urged to keep windows shut, reduce driving and idling, and avoid burning wood. Consider shifting outdoor plans to early Sunday or after the alert ends.
More smoke may arrive next week, and the MPCA warns the alert could be extended if conditions worsen.
