Minneapolis, Minn. – Unhealthy air from Canadian wildfires is expected to blanket Minnesota through Sunday night, prompting a statewide air quality alert that will remain in effect until 11 p.m.
According to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA), air quality will reach the orange AQI category—unhealthy for sensitive groups—across all regions beginning late Saturday. The alert, issued at 4:21 p.m. Friday, urges residents with asthma, heart conditions, or other respiratory issues to limit time outdoors.
Every major region—from Duluth and St. Cloud to Rochester and the Twin Cities—is expected to experience deteriorating air as wildfire smoke moves southward. The MPCA recommends that Minnesotans avoid strenuous outdoor activity, run air purifiers indoors, and keep windows shut. Those with health conditions should have medication on hand and consult their care providers if symptoms worsen.
This alert covers the entire state, including rural counties and metro hubs, and follows a string of similar warnings issued in recent summers. Minneapolis and St. Paul schools and summer programs may adjust outdoor activities based on air conditions Sunday morning.
Another update is expected by Sunday afternoon. Residents should monitor www.pca.state.mn.us for real-time AQI and future advisories.
