Minneapolis, Minnesota – Near zero visibility is slowing traffic across the Twin Cities early this morning, with dense fog cutting sightlines to less than a quarter mile along Interstate 94 and Interstate 35W until 10 a.m. Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in the Twin Cities, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect for much of central and southern Minnesota through midmorning. Drivers on I-35E, I-494 and Highway 62 may encounter sudden drops in visibility, especially near rivers and low-lying areas. Officials urge motorists to use low-beam headlights, reduce speed and allow extra following distance.
The fog will gradually lift by late morning, giving way to partial sunshine and highs in the low to mid-50s across Minneapolis, St. Paul and surrounding suburbs. Another round of fog is possible early Thursday before a wetter pattern takes hold.
Rain is likely Friday, with scattered thunderstorms possible by late afternoon and evening. Wet roads could impact the Friday commute along I-94 and I-35 corridors. By early Saturday morning, colder air will wrap in behind the system, changing rain to light snow. Minor accumulations are possible, particularly on grassy surfaces and elevated roadways such as bridges.
Highs will cool into the 40s Saturday before rebounding into the 50s again by Sunday under mostly sunny skies.
The fog advisory expires at 10 a.m., but additional alerts may be issued later this week as rain and snow chances increase.
