Chicago, Illinois – A broad swath of the Midwest faces an elevated tornado threat Wednesday, with severe storms expected to erupt from central Illinois to northern Ohio. Communities along this corridor should brace for damaging winds, large hail, and the possibility of a strong tornado between noon and 10 p.m.

According to the Storm Prediction Center, conditions will become increasingly favorable for rotating storms across parts of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio. A Level 2 to Level 3 risk zone (slight to enhanced) covers several major metro areas, including Chicago, Indianapolis, Detroit, and Toledo. The most dangerous storms could produce isolated strong tornadoes and very large hail.

In central Illinois, cities like Springfield and Champaign are under threat during the early afternoon hours, shifting east toward Fort Wayne, South Bend, and Lima by evening. Interstates 55, 65, and 70 could see hazardous travel conditions, especially during peak commute hours.

Residents are urged to have multiple ways to receive warnings, keep devices charged, and avoid unnecessary travel during storm periods. Schools and businesses should review safety protocols.

This marks the first widespread tornado risk of June for the region. More updates and possible watches are likely by Wednesday morning.
