Elmhurst, IL –A police dashcam captured a bright meteor lighting up the Chicago suburbs early Saturday morning, stunning viewers across the Midwest.

According to the Elmhurst Police Department, Officer Jacob Wiegele was patrolling Illinois Route 83 near St. Charles Road around 5 a.m. on Saturday, October 25, 2025, when he saw the meteor streaking south over Elmhurst. Acting quickly, the officer activated his dash camera and recorded the object’s descent through the dark sky.

The Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police shared the video on social media, showing a glowing fireball cutting across the horizon before fading from view. The brief, nine-second clip has since drawn attention from residents across DuPage County and the greater Chicago area.

While no debris or damage was reported, experts say such bright meteors—often called fireballs—are typically caused by small space rocks burning up in Earth’s atmosphere.

Police said the sighting was a reminder of how officers often witness rare events while most of the region is still asleep.
