Chicago, IL – A powerful Arctic blast is gripping the Midwest, bringing dangerously cold temperatures and heavy lake-effect snow to millions through the weekend.

The National Weather Service warns that wind chills could plunge as low as -30°F in parts of the Dakotas and Minnesota, creating life-threatening conditions. Temperatures are forecast to be the coldest since mid-February, with much of the northern Plains and Midwest affected. Residents should prepare for frostbite risks within minutes and ensure survival kits are accessible during travel.

According to the Weather Prediction Center, heavy lake-effect snow will impact areas along Lake Michigan, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario from Friday to Monday. Snowfall could total several feet in regions such as Buffalo and Syracuse, New York. Interstate travel along I-90 and I-81 may become nearly impossible due to drifting snow and whiteout conditions.

Communities in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Illinois are urged to monitor updates and take precautions to avoid hazardous conditions.

Bundle up, stay informed, and limit travel as conditions worsen. Be sure to check local forecasts and follow emergency guidelines for safety.
