Billings, Montana – Severe thunderstorms could batter a swath of the central U.S. from Montana to the Texas Panhandle Friday evening, with large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes on the table. Cities including Missoula, Billings, Cheyenne, and Amarillo are under heightened threat, with some areas likely to see wind gusts topping 75 mph and hail over 2 inches in diameter.
According to the NOAA Storm Prediction Center, storms are expected to fire up across central Montana by Friday afternoon and track southeast into the evening. The strongest storms are forecast to develop in and around Billings, where the greatest risk for hurricane-force winds and large hail is outlined.
Bozeman, Gillette, and Casper also sit in the storm corridor, with potential impacts to I-90 and I-25. Residents should secure outdoor items, charge electronic devices, and prepare for possible power outages. Tornadoes remain a lower but still notable threat.
From Denver to Oklahoma City, marginal to slight risk areas remain for damaging wind and brief downpours. Localized travel delays are possible on major interstates and regional airports.
Severe weather alerts remain in effect through Friday night. Additional watches may be issued as the system evolves southward.
