State College, PA – A new round of precipitation is moving into the Mid-Atlantic this afternoon, bringing widespread rain across the region and a transition to snow in the higher elevations of Pennsylvania and areas farther north.

According to the US National Weather Service Middle Atlantic River Forecast Center, rain will spread through the region today with the highest rainfall totals expected along western Virginia, West Virginia, and western Maryland. Forecast maps show amounts ranging from around a quarter-inch to near an inch in some locations by tonight.

Higher terrain in Pennsylvania is expected to see the rain change over to snow later this afternoon and evening as colder air moves in. Light accumulations are possible primarily across ridge tops and elevated communities.

Forecasters say rivers and streams across the region could experience small rises, though widespread flooding is not expected at this time. Still, the Weather Service advises residents to monitor conditions, especially in areas that typically respond quickly to moderate rainfall.

Most lowland areas from Maryland to Virginia will remain all rain, with steady precipitation expected through the late afternoon before tapering off overnight. Travelers in higher-elevation parts of Pennsylvania should be prepared for reduced visibility and slick spots as the rain-to-snow transition occurs.
